The Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament today expressed its disappointment at the Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s failure to speak about Trident in his keynote speech to the Labour Party conference today.
Whilst referring to the need to prevent proliferation and work with others to prevent a nuclear arms race, the Prime Minister did not mention or elaborate upon his proposal to cut Britain’s Trident replacement subs from four to three, made at the UN last week.
Kate Hudson, Chair of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, said “Gordon Brown has outlined a wide-ranging programme to help the British people, all of which requires money. Scrapping Trident and its replacement would be a sure way to save in excess of £100 billion.”
“It is hard to see how the Prime Minister can simultaneously work to stop the nuclear arms race, and press ahead with developing a new nuclear weapons system to replace Trident. Gordon Brown has got to stop trying to ride two horses at once and listen to the majority of the British people. He must scrap Trident and help make the world a safer place – free from the fear of nuclear annihilation.”
