CND is proud to be part of the Global Day of Action on Military Spending, which this year in the UK is highlighting the eye-watering £100 billion earmarked for the replacement of the Trident nuclear weapons system.
In the latest figures, world military expenditure reached an all-time high of $1.75 trillion. The UK ranked fourth, and plans to spend £38 billion in 2014/15. The government protects the military budget, while subjecting vital public services to drastic spending cuts.
CND’s General Secretary, Kate Hudson, said:
‘While the British public are living through the deepest spending cuts in recent history, the government still sees fit to waste over £100bn on a Cold War weapons system and to spend £38bn on the military this year alone. The Global Day of Action on Military Spending is a vital challenge to the skewed priorities of this government, and governments around the world who choose weapons of war over the welfare of their people.’
