On Monday 14 April, people around the world are calling for military spending to be redirected to meet human needs. Join a coalition of organisations in London at DFID (22 Whitehall, map) at 11am, before taking the message to other government departments. Full details below.

CND is proud to be part of the Global Day of Action on Military Spending, which this year in the UK is highlighting the eye-watering £100 billion earmarked for the replacement of the Trident nuclear weapons system.

In the latest figures, world military expenditure reached an all-time high of $1.75 trillion. The UK ranked fourth, and plans to spend £38 billion in 2014/15. The government protects the military budget, while subjecting vital public services to drastic spending cuts.

CND’s General Secretary, Kate Hudson, said:

‘While the British public are living through the deepest spending cuts in recent history, the government still sees fit to waste over £100bn on a Cold War weapons system and to spend £38bn on the military this year alone. The Global Day of Action on Military Spending is a vital challenge to the skewed priorities of this government, and governments around the world who choose weapons of war over the welfare of their people.’
