The increasing risk of nuclear war threatens us all. There is no way to be prepared for a nuclear attack: we have to stop it happening.

CND condemns the Russian military aggression against Ukraine. There is no justification for war and we must stand against the escalating threats of the conflict turning nuclear. Real global security means a commitment towards peace, dialogue and disarmament. It also means putting pressure on politicians to prioritise the real threats to the way we live – including economic hardship and the environmental catastrophe.

Urgent peace negotiations to end the conflict are essential.

As the invasion of Ukraine continues, our thoughts are with the people of Ukraine and with all those courageously protesting against war.

The existential threat of a nuclear war between NATO and Russia must be eliminated. Between them, they have around 12,000 nuclear weapons between them—some 100 times the power of the Hiroshima bomb.

We urge our government to get all parties to the negotiating table, to secure Russian troop withdrawal, to make the Minsk agreements work and call a halt to NATO expansion.

There is no possibility whatsoever that war will resolve these complex problems, and it might end with the destruction of humanity. Only dialogue and openness to the concerns of others will make a difference. This is where government efforts must be focused.

There is an increasing risk of nuclear war over Ukraine. Even one nuclear warhead could kill and injure over a million people. Join CND’s calls for an end to conflict in Ukraine so we can avoid the threat of nuclear war.
