Walter Wolfgang, CND Vice-President and recently elected member of the
Labour Party National Executive Committee, has pledged to work tirelessly to
prevent the replacement of Trident, Britain’s nuclear weapons system.
Wolfgang’s two-year term with the NEC begins today with a meeting during the
Labour Party Conference.
Mr Wolfgang said, “It is a shame that the Trident resolutions were ruled out
at the party conference. I think there was a fear that the resolution would
be carried like it was at the TUC two weeks ago.”
He continued, “The Labour Party should have a debate on Trident. As a member
of the NEC I will do everything I can to ensure a full debate takes place.”
Speaking at a packed CND/Stop the War Coalition fringe meeting last night,
Wolfgang regretted the lack of debate on Trident at the Labour Party
Conference and made clear his opposition to a new generation of nuclear
weapons in Britain. He said that the government has no excuse for spending
£25 billion or more on Trident replacement when funding for public services
and social welfare is sorely lacking. He also highlighted the concern that
if the government replaces Trident it will trigger global proliferation and
spark a new nuclear arms race.
