The Scottish National Party – the current party of government in Scotland – has adopted a motion at their 2021 annual conference to remove the Trident nuclear weapons system from the country within three years of Scottish independence. This provides a clear timetable for the nuclear disarmament of Scotland should the country vote to leave the UK.

This development adds further pressure on UK defence officials, who have been drawing up continency plans to move Trident it was revealed earlier this month.

It was reported that senior civil servants believe it would be very difficult to find an alternative, as confirmed by CND in our ‘Trident: Nowhere to Go’ report. Siting the nuclear weapons system in the US or France is being considered, a move that would finally put an end to the government’s claim that Trident is an independent system.
