60 Faces: Joan Horrocks -

Joan Horrocks was the co-founder of Musicians Against Nuclear Arms (MANA), now Musicians for Peace and Disarmament, arranging numerous start-studded concerts which raised tens of thousands of pounds for CND and other peace organisations. She was also chair of the Workers’ Music Association and, with her partner Laurie Bielby, helped to organise many of their summer schools. She performed herself, as an alto in the New Philharmonia Chorus. She had also wide international interests and in earlier years worked for the British Council, where she was a member of the second trade mission to visit China. Joan served as a vice-president of CND for many years.

Bruce Kent remarked in her obituary, ‘Her drive, her energy, her hard work and powers of persuasion never weakened. Distinguished conductors and famous performers all responded to her calls.’
