Joseph Rotblat was a distinguished physicist and founder of the influential Pugwash Conferences.Rotblat escaped from the Nazis as he was working in England when the Second World War broke out, but his wife was tragically killed in a concentration camp in his native Poland. Because of a fear of Hitler acquiring one first, Rotblat worked on the Manhattan Project which produced the first nuclear bomb. Once it became apparent that Germany would not succeed, Rotblat left the Manhattan Project and for the rest of his life campaigned for disarmament.
His research work contributed toward the ratification of the 1963 Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Along with Bertrand Russell, he founded the Pugwash Conferences on Science and World Affairs and shared the 1995 Nobel Peace Prize with the organisation, for nuclear disarmament efforts.
