National Union of Students backs Stop Trident demo

The NUS National Executive Council which gathered this week has passed a motion in support of Saturday’s major Stop Trident demo.

Shakira Martin, NUS vice president (Further Education), who will speak at the Trafalgar Square rally, said: “today the National Union of Students, which represents 7 million students, voted to support this Saturday’s Stop Trident national demonstration.

“If Trident was ever used then hundreds of millions of people would be killed. Instead of spending over £100 billion on weapons of mass destruction, I believe we should be funding free education.”

Shelly Asquith, NUS vice president (Welfare), said: “We are proud that our union has voted to support Saturday’s mobilisation – taking a firm stance that renewal of nuclear weapons is unjust, unsustainable and unnecessary.

“We look forward to seeing students join the demo, support CND’s call to scrap Trident and instead to invest in free education at every level.”
