Most of the world’s states – including the UK – will gather at the United Nations in New York in 2022 to discuss progress – or lack thereof – on the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). This binding, multilateral treaty entered into force in 1970 with the goal of general and complete nuclear weapons disarmament.

These conferences take place every five years but in recent years, non-nuclear states have grown so frustrated with the nuclear states’ unwillingness to take steps towards disarmament at these events, that another treaty has been agreed, the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).
CND will be using the NPT Review Conference (RevCon) to highlight the failures of the UK and other nuclear-armed states to get rid of their nuclear weapons and indeed, in the case of the UK, to instead decide to have more. We’ll be updating this page with developments.
Event
- The conference will not take place as planned in January 2022 due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. However, CND is still organising an online meeting to assess the disarmament prospects for the UK. Join us!
- CND recently met with the President of the RevCon to share our concerns that the UK is breaking the terms of the NPT by increasing its number of nuclear warheads. Find out more.
